How Do Monarch Butterflies Know Where to Go?
Every fall, monarch butterflies begin an incredible journey south. This month, use DFW gardens and nature spaces to investigate how monarchs migrate, what they need along the way, and how a butterfly that has never made the trip before can find its way toward Mexico.
Make a Guess
How do you think a monarch knows when it is time to migrate and which direction to travel? Think about sunlight, temperature, weather, plants, and instinct.
Choose a Field Site
Visit one of the featured DFW locations below and look for butterflies, flowering plants, milkweed, and other signs of pollinator habitat.
Look for Clues
Observe which flowers attract insects, where butterflies rest, what plants are available for food, and how weather or sunlight might affect their movement.
Follow the Journey
Record what you notice, then compare your observations with a monarch migration map. How might North Texas help monarchs during their long trip south?

Explore gardens and the Butterfly House while learning about monarchs, pollinators, and migration. Their September Homeschool Day is centered specifically on Monarch Migration.
- Look for butterflies feeding on flowers.
- Compare butterflies you see inside and outside.
- Notice which plants provide nectar or shelter.

Explore a free garden designed to highlight pollinators, migratory routes, and the native plants that support butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinating animals.

Choose Your Challenge
Siblings can investigate the same monarch mystery while completing activities at their own level.
Explorer Challenge
Younger Learners · Approximately Ages 4–8
- Find three different flowers or flowering plants.
- Watch each plant quietly for a few minutes.
- Count how many butterflies, bees, or other insects visit.
- Draw a monarch and color its orange, black, and white pattern.
- Trace the monarch's journey from Texas toward Mexico on a simple map.
Think about it: What would a butterfly need to eat and rest during a very long trip?
Scientist Challenge
Upper Elementary & Middle School · Approximately Ages 9–13
- Record the date, temperature, wind, and weather during your visit.
- Identify at least three flowering plants being used by insects.
- Look for milkweed and explain why it is different from a nectar plant.
- Use a migration map to estimate how far monarchs may still have to travel.
- Explain how weather and available food could help or hinder migration.
Think about it: Which environmental clues might tell a monarch that it is time to migrate?
Researcher Challenge
Teen Learners · Approximately Ages 14+
- Research how monarchs use the sun and environmental cues during migration.
- Compare the eastern and western monarch migration routes.
- Investigate why North Texas is important along the migration corridor.
- Research the difference between milkweed host plants and nectar plants.
- Evaluate one conservation strategy that could improve monarch habitat in your community.
Think about it: How can a butterfly navigate thousands of miles to a place it has never visited before?
