My kids have been campaigning for a trip to Hurricane Harbor Arlington for years.
Every time we drive past it, someone spots the slides from the freeway and starts asking when we're finally going to go. The problem was that I hadn't been in over a decade, and my memory of the park wasn't exactly strong enough to make me rush out and buy tickets.
Then we got invited to attend a media day, and suddenly I was out of excuses.
After spending eight hours floating lazy rivers, watching my oldest chase the biggest rides he could find, and repeatedly being talked into visiting the wave pool despite my better judgment, I can officially say Hurricane Harbor surprised me in the best way possible.
We attended Hurricane Harbor Arlington as guests of the park for a media event. All opinions are my own.
The Weather Almost Had Me Canceling the Whole Thing
The day started with a little uncertainty. It was absolutely pouring rain in Fort Worth when we left the house. Not a light drizzle. The kind of rain that makes you wonder if your plans are about to fall apart before you've even made it to the highway.
I genuinely thought there was a chance we would arrive and find out the park had delayed opening or closed for the day. Instead, Arlington looked completely different. There wasn't any rain at all. The skies were overcast, which ended up working in our favor. The cloud cover kept temperatures more comfortable than a typical Texas summer day and made it much easier to spend hours outside without feeling like we were melting.
My kids were already excited before we arrived, but once they saw the park, the excitement level immediately jumped up a few notches.
Let's Talk about Splash Island
The first place we headed was Splash Island, and this area alone is probably responsible for changing my perspective on Hurricane Harbor.
The space is huge and incredibly well designed for families. There are slides, climbing structures, water features, splash zones, and more things for kids to explore than I could count. Hurricane Harbor describes Splash Island as a 58,000-square-foot family area featuring a three-story play structure with 110 interactive water features, 17 slides, and a giant tipping bucket. It is clearly one of the park's signature attractions.
What impressed me most wasn't necessarily the size. It was the layout.
As parents, we've all been to attractions where you spend the entire time scanning crowds and trying to figure out where your children disappeared to. Splash Island felt different. I could sit in one area and still keep an eye on my kids while they played. That made the experience far more relaxing than I expected.
We were fortunate enough to have a cabana during our visit, and I completely understand why families rent them. The cabanas overlook the play area, making it easy to watch your kids while having a comfortable place to sit and cool off. Ours included stocked beverages and a safe for our belongings, which was incredibly convenient throughout the day.
More than anything, I appreciated the location. I wasn't constantly moving around trying to keep everyone in sight. I could actually sit down, relax, and still know exactly what my kids were doing.
We ended up spending almost two hours at Splash Island.
My oldest and daughter immediately started exploring slides while my youngest mostly stuck to playing in the water. That's pretty typical for him. My older two tend to be the thrill seekers in the family. My youngest and I have a different approach to life. He looked at some of those larger slides and basically decided they weren't for him. Honestly, I felt the same way. Life has enough ups and downs already. Neither of us felt the need to voluntarily add more.
If you have younger children or kids who aren't quite ready for the biggest attractions, Splash Island is an incredible place to spend a good chunk of your day.
Some of Other Favorites
After Splash Island, we started exploring the rest of the park. If you had asked my kids before the trip what they were most excited about, none of them would have said the lazy river. By the end of the day, though, it was the one attraction everybody agreed on. We floated it once and then came back later to do it again.
There's something nice about having an attraction that works for everyone. My oldest wasn't giving up his thrill rides anytime soon, my daughter was still excited about slides, and my youngest preferred calmer activities, but the lazy river was one of the few places where all four of us were equally happy.
Sometimes the biggest surprise of the day isn't the newest attraction or the tallest slide. Sometimes it's the simple thing you didn't expect to enjoy as much as you did.
For our family, that was definitely the lazy river.
In addition to the lazy river, my kids absolutely loved the wave pool. I, however, spent most of my time there doing what I imagine most parents do: mentally tracking all three children at once while preparing for every possible scenario. The kids begged to go twice, and we did. Both times, they had an amazing time. Both times, I was relieved when we moved on to something else.
That's not a criticism of the wave pool at all. It was exactly what a wave pool is supposed to be. It simply reminded me that my children are much braver than I am. Thankfully, all three of my kids wore life jackets throughout the day, which definitely helped ease some of my concerns.
Don't Miss Out on the Lagoon
One area that I really appreciated was the Lagoon Pool. At only about a foot and a half deep, it provided a much calmer environment than some of the other attractions. My youngest immediately felt comfortable there, and I appreciated not having my heart rate elevated the entire time.
It's easy to focus on the biggest slides and most exciting attractions when talking about water parks, but spaces like this matter too. Not every child is looking for an adrenaline rush, and having an area where younger kids can confidently play made a big difference for our family. My youngest spent much of his day simply enjoying the water, and the Lagoon Pool became one of his favorite spots in the park.
My Oldest Found His New Favorite Ride
While my youngest and I were perfectly content staying close to the ground, my oldest son had very different plans. One of his favorite experiences was Tornado. The ride required at least two passengers, and since I could not get on and leave my other two unsupervised, I asked two nice women if my son could accompany them. He was so excited when they agreed.
He absolutely loved it. The moment he got off the ride, he wanted to do it again. Watching him confidently take on rides that I would never personally volunteer for was one of my favorite parts of the day. He spent the entire visit looking for bigger thrills while I happily supported his adventures from a safe distance.
Let's Talk About the Food
We had access to the all-day dining plan during our visit, which allows guests to receive meals every 90 minutes. Drinks are purchased separately through a different plan, and if I had one suggestion for Hurricane Harbor, it would be combining those two programs. It would make things much simpler for families.
As for the food itself, it was a mixed experience. My youngest wanted barbecue, so we stopped at the Smokehouse near Splash Island. He immediately complained that it was too spicy. After trying it myself, I understood exactly what he meant. The seasoning leaned heavily into pepper and heat. If you enjoy spicy food, you may feel differently, but it wasn't our favorite meal of the day.
Thankfully, everything else was much better. My daughter ordered chicken strips and fries and happily cleaned her plate. My oldest got a double cheeseburger and thought it was really good. The biggest surprise for me was the chicken club sandwich I ordered from a food stand near the Lagoon Pool. It was genuinely good. Not "good for amusement park food." Actually good. It was flavorful, filling, and something I would absolutely order again on a future visit.
So, Is Hurricane Harbor Arlington Worth It?
Absolutely. The biggest surprise of the day wasn't any particular ride. It was realizing how much the park had changed since my last visit more than a decade ago.
For me personally, Splash Island was the highlight of the park. The layout was thoughtful, family-friendly, and designed in a way that allowed me to actually relax while still keeping an eye on my kids. If I had to choose one area that changed my opinion of Hurricane Harbor, it would be Splash Island.
My oldest would probably vote for Tornado. My daughter would make a strong case for the wave pool and Splash Island. And my youngest was perfectly content sticking to calmer attractions and spending time in the water.
By the time we left, we had spent eight hours at the park and decided to head home a little early to beat traffic. The kids were tired, but they were still talking about their favorite parts of the day during the drive home. My daughter even told me Hurricane Harbor is now one of her favorite water parks.
That's probably the strongest review I can give. If you've been putting off a visit because you haven't been in years or you're wondering whether it's worth the trip, I completely understand. I felt the same way.
