LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Grapevine is bringing back Homeschool Week September 21-25, and if you've been wanting to go without paying regular admission prices, this is a good week to do it. Tickets are $12 per person for both kids and adults; there's no group minimum, and you can go with just your family or make a whole co-op day out of it.
We've been going to LEGOLAND's homeschool events for years, back when it was only one Homeschool Day instead of an entire week. Now it's grown into a national Homeschool Week, which gives families much more flexibility in when they can go. One thing I did notice this year is that SEA LIFE Grapevine doesn't appear to be doing Homeschool Week at the same time. In the past, we've been able to pair the two, but as of right now, I only see LEGOLAND on the calendar for September 21-25.
What to know before you go
According to LEGOLAND's website, you'll need to show proof of homeschooling at admission. We've personally never been asked for it, but I would still bring something just in case. Texas doesn't require homeschool families to register with the state, so there's not really an official "proof of homeschool" document for most of us to pull out of a folder. You can make a simple homeschool ID in Canva, use one of the sites that offers free homeschool IDs, or even keep a curriculum receipt handy. I wouldn't overthink it, but I also wouldn't show up with absolutely nothing and let that be the day they decide to ask.
Tickets are limited and need to be purchased online ahead of time. You can't purchase the Homeschool Week tickets at the door. Adults also have to be accompanied by a child 17 or younger, and kids under 2 are free.
Another thing that's important to know is that there's no reentry. Once you leave, you're done for the day, so think about food before you go. There is a cafe inside. We've eaten there once and weren't big fans, so we usually plan around it. We've packed a lunch and eaten in the Grapevine Mills food court before, and we've also just bought lunch at the mall. If you don't want to cut your LEGOLAND time short for food, eat a good breakfast before you go and plan on grabbing lunch once you're finished.
Parking is probably the easiest part. LEGOLAND is inside Grapevine Mills, so there's plenty of free parking. Just follow the signs for LEGOLAND once you get to the mall.
What Homeschool Week is actually like
We always go right when they open, and I highly recommend doing the same. We're usually there for about 3-4 hours, which gives my kids plenty of time to do everything without feeling rushed. Going at opening also gives you a nice head start before more families begin coming in.
And since I know somebody is wondering about the crowds, Homeschool Week has never felt overwhelming to us. LEGOLAND on a busy weekend can be A LOT. Homeschool days have always been much more manageable. There are enough families there that it feels like an event, but we've never experienced the kind of crowd where we're spending half the day standing in lines.
My kids are 5, 7 and 9 now, and I think around 5 is really the sweet spot because they're big enough to do pretty much everything. That said, we've been coming since my oldest was around 2, and at 9 he still hasn't aged out of it. I know LEGOLAND can look like it's mostly geared toward younger kids, but there is plenty for older elementary kids to enjoy too.
The driving cars are hands down the favorite in our house. If you've been following our adventures for a while, you already know my youngest and rides that leave the ground are not friends, so the bicycle-style ride that goes up in the air is a hard pass for him. He'll happily get on the other rides though. The big climbing structure in the play area is another one all three of my kids still love.
They also usually have activities happening throughout the day, so keep an eye on the schedule when you arrive. We've found that there's normally something going on every couple of hours, and it's an easy way to break up the rides and free play.
Something new: homeschool guides
This is the part I'm actually really excited about this year. LEGOLAND now has homeschool guides divided into three grade bands: K-1, 2-3 and 4-5. And they're not just random worksheets to make the trip look educational. The activities actually use different parts of LEGOLAND to teach concepts your kids can work through while they're there.
At MINILAND, for example, older kids can look at the landmarks, sort them into natural and human-made features, and design their own model city. Kingdom Quest turns into a mini experiment where kids can record their scores over multiple rides and use the data to explore whether the game is fair. Then over at Build & Test, they're building LEGO race cars, testing them on the ramps and figuring out which design choices actually make their cars faster.
Each guide also includes a teacher page explaining the activity and how it connects to TEKS, along with student pages they can complete while you're there. I really like this because it gives us an easy way to add an actual lesson to a place my kids already enjoy without me having to plan a whole unit study around our trip. Print the guide for your child's grade before you go, throw it on a clipboard, and you've got a field trip lesson ready to go.
A few tips from us
Go right at opening if you can and give yourself about 3-4 hours. Buy your tickets online ahead of time because the Homeschool Week tickets are limited and aren't available at the door. I wouldn't stress too much about the homeschool verification, but I would bring something with you just in case.
Remember that there's no reentry, so have a plan for food before you walk in. Parking at Grapevine Mills is free and easy, and I definitely recommend printing the homeschool guides before your visit if you want to add a little more learning to the day.
And if it's your first time, don't skip the driving cars or the climbing structure. Those have consistently been the favorites in our house, even as my kids have gotten older.
